Things to See and Do in Slovakia
Slovak culture is much admired and the country has plenty of folk traditions, including a national dance that is worth seeking out. The capital, Bratislava, is home to museums, art galleries and auditoriums. Indeed, the country has produced several world-famous composers and artists over the years. Spiš Castle is located in the central region of the country and is an unrivalled, 12th century example of stone castle fortifications. The Tatra Mountains, which lie close to the Polish border, are also very popular. Here you can enjoy well-marked nature trails and hiking routes, as well as take part in skiing in the winter months. The Atlantis Centre in Levice is a good place to take children – it is fun and educational, focussing on science.
A Holiday by Car in Slovakia
Given the high quality of most of Slovakia's roads and the abundant accommodation in most towns, holidaying in the country with cheap car hire is a great idea. Touring is easy, with many car hire vehicle options available. As such, the country is equally suited to lone travellers as it is to families. Most tourists and business visitors start in the capital and drive eastwards, but few venture as far as Košice. However, once you have travelled this far, the true Slovakia becomes apparent in all of its rural beauty. There are many lakes, national parks and mountainous areas just waiting to be discovered by road, and all that is required is a car rental from National to get you going. Given that both accommodation and fuel costs are relatively cheap, touring Slovakia by car makes a lot of sense.
Famous Road Trips to Take in Slovakia
The mountain road from Liptovský Hrádok to Ždiar is a 45-mile journey, which is a slower but much more satisfying route than the main E550. Follow signs to Pribylina, following the valley of the Belá River. This winding road has many hairpins, and passes by some of the country's best ski resorts. It is a delight to drive in summer. Another good road trip for car hire is one that starts in Michalovce, a typically provincial Slovakian town on the Laborec River in the east of the country. From here, take the 115-mile trip west to Rimavská Sobota, another historic town close to the Hungarian border. The route takes you through the charming Národný National Park, known for its cave networks and wildlife.
