Things to See and Do in the Czech Republic
Prague really is unmissable, whatever your tastes. The city's spectacular architecture is many people's first impression, but dig deeper and you'll find much more. Strolling by the river provides great people-watching, or you can drive a few miles to the stunning Palace Gardens. Add plenty of cheap culture, the world-famous Toy Museum and Prague Zoo, and you could easily spend weeks here. Don't forget the rest of the country, though. Brno's vast Baroque cathedral and riot of modernist buildings, the spectacular spas and fountains in Karlovy Vary, Bohemia's extraordinary rock formations... a car could take you anywhere!
A Holiday by Car in the Czech Republic
To see the country's variety while staying in good yet cheap accommodation, you could begin in Cesky Krumlov, with a small-town Czech flavour – easily accessible with your car rental. Despite its compactness, it's full of interest: visit the beautiful theatre, kayak on the Vlatava River or marvel at the huge castle. Then, drive the 110 miles to Prague and enjoy the capital's many and varied attractions – not least the wonderful cheap live music performances – for a few days. Take advantage of your car hire to make the scenic 165-mile drive to Kromeriz's superb art gallery, then head on to Olomouc a few miles north and award yourself a treat: the city's infamous, smelly, yet oh-so-tasty, cheese!
Famous Road Trips to Take in the Czech Republic
An outstanding way to see the Czech Republic is to take the fast E50 from Prague, southeast towards Mikulov, close to the Austrian border – pausing in Brno if you wish. With car rental arranged, this 160-mile drive is enjoyable, with good roads and plenty to see. Mikulov itself is like something out of a fairytale, with huddled stone buildings surrounded by quiet fields, and cheap food and drink is easy to find. Alternatively, you could head for Telč, about 100 miles from the capital, but we suggest you take in some of the quieter country roads along the way. Your destination is dominated by its vast, UNESCO-recognised town square, lined with gabled Renaissance houses.
